If you have not driven or walked along Yonge Street south of Bloor lately, you owe it to yourself to do so soon. Construction on the incredible FIVE Condos at St. Joseph will be at grade in February, and the process of building this mixed-use development while preserving many of the original building’s historic elements is fascinating. The construction is really most impressive, with the existing historical façade supported by a massive steel structure. This is one of the largest retention projects ever in the City of Toronto, and it is incredible.

Graywood Developments Ltd. and Mod Developments Inc. are doing a tremendous job enhancing the revitalization of this prime Toronto area on Yonge south of Bloor. The exterior of the modern 48-storey building is by Hariri Pontarini Architects, and ERA Architects is restoring aspects of historic 1880s buildings on Yonge to house new retail venues – one of which will be RBC. In addition, the façade on St. Joseph Street includes the restoration of a four-storey 1905-‘07 Gothic Revival warehouse façade as the condominium’s entry. And on Nicholas Street, the architecture will also hearken to the area’s heritage and house retail tenants. These shops and services will serve both the condominium and local residents.

Add to all of this that interiors by Cecconi Simone, and the design team is extraordinary. Suites are going quickly, and it is easy to understand why. Residents will enjoy a 10,000 sq. ft. amenity space called FIVE ON FIVE, which features a fabulous 6,000 sq. ft. outdoor roof garden. The suite features and finishes are luxurious, including kitchens with Cecconi Simone-designed cabinetry, choice of granite or Corian countertops and a fabulous Miele appliance package.

The two companies building Five CONDOS are among the industry’s most prestigious. Graywood is the developer of The Ritz‑Carlton, Toronto, and MOD is led by Gary Switzer, who has spearheaded several award-winning landmark condominium residences in the city’s core.
